Forms: What is Form 944 and does your payroll service support it?

Some employers with small payrolls (usually $4000 or less in wages for the year) may be eligible to pay and file their federal employment taxes annually. If you received written notice from the IRS that you are a 944 filer, you must file Form 944. You can pay and file your 944 taxes and forms electronically from your account.

We currently do not support Form 943 filing for agricultural employers.

To change your filer status and deposit schedule:

  1. Go here.
    (Or click the Setup tab.)
  2. Click Tax Setup.
  3. Click Federal Tax Information.
  4. Under Filing Requirement & Deposit Schedule, click Change or add new schedule.
  5. Choose your new filer status and deposit schedule, and choose the effective date.
  6. Click OK.

You can deposit taxes annually only if your federal tax liability for the year is less than $2500. If your business might grow and you cannot be sure of your accrued liability, you should deposit more frequently. The IRS will assess penalties if you end the year owing more than $2500 and have not made deposits.
