Form 940: Out-of-balance issues

If you try to create a 940 payment or file a Form 940 and receive an out-of-balance message, then not all of your state unemployment insurance (SUI) tax payments have been paid or recorded properly in your payroll account.

Before you file Form 940, make sure you've recorded all your SUI taxes. Form 940 can't be completed without this information. Why?

Research SUI out-of-balance issues

Here are a few simple tips you can use to figure out SUI out-of-balance issues:

  1. Go here.
    (Or click the Taxes & Forms tab.)
  2. Click View Tax Payments you have made or View your Tax Liability Report.

Record SUI payments

If you need to enter a missing payment, do the following:

  1. Go here.
    (Or click the Taxes & Forms tab.)
  2. Click Enter Prior Tax History.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions.
