Form 940: What is it?

Form 940 is the Employer's Annual Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA) Return. You'll use this form to report and reconcile all FUTA tax paid and the balance to be paid. This form compares the amount of owed and the amount already paid by you, the employer.

It is usually due on January 31 by mail or February 10 if filing electronically. When this tax form is due, a link to it appears on your To Do list. Simply click the link and follow the onscreen instructions.

Before you file Form 940

Before you file Form 940, make sure you've recorded all your state unemployment insurance (SUI) taxes. Form 940 can't be completed without this information. Why?

If you try to create a 940 payment or file a Form 940 and receive a SUI Out of Balance message, then not all of your SUI tax payments have been paid or recorded properly in your payroll account.
