Company: Enter or change the name my company uses for tax returns

Your company's filing name is the name submitted when you applied for a federal Employer Identification Number (EIN). If you're a sole proprietor, your filing name is the owner's name, even if you do business under a different name.

When you make tax payments, your tax forms must use the exact filing name, down to the letter. We need the exact name to fill in forms for you. To confirm the name, look for your company name on the booklet of tax coupons sent to you by the government.

Note: If you enrolled in EFTPS and you change your filing name, you need to re-enroll for EFTPS before you can make electronic federal tax payments. If you are changing your company type as well as the name (for example, from sole proprietor to corporation), follow instructions for closing your business.

  1. Go here.
(Or choose Setup > Tax Setup and then General Tax Information.)
  2. Enter your Filing Name (the name you use when you file your tax returns).
  3. Click OK.
