If you require your employees to make certain payments through their paychecks (such as uniform fees), some orders allow such payments to be exempt from garnishment. We'll set up your account so that you can enter the amount that should be exempt from payment.
QuickBooks Online Payroll calculates the amount available to withhold for certain garnishments (for example, child/spousal support) based on the employee's disposable income , which is the amount of an employee's income that's left after taxes and exempt deductions (as defined by the order) have been taken out. However, your state may define the order based on gross wages.
Sometimes your employee and the garnishing agency make an agreement about the payment and the amount that must be withheld each pay period. We'll help you set up the garnishment as a voluntary deduction.
If a child or spousal support order lists different amounts for items such as “current child support” or “past-due child support,” you should set up more than one garnishment.
