File T4 slips online with the CRA

File your T4 slips with the CRA before the end of February each year.

How do I file online?

1. In the navigation bar, click Taxes > Payroll Tax.
2. Click Annual Forms.
3. Click T4 slip (employer) to prepare an employer copy of all your T4 slips to submit to the CRA. 
4. On the page for the form, click View to open the form in Adobe Acrobat.
5. Make sure all the information is correct. When you are done, close the window.
6. In the T4 window, click Submit.
7. Follow the directions on the screen to download your slips as an XML file and upload the file to the CRA website.

You can file information returns over the internet only during the CRA hours of service.

When you file online, you don't need to file a T4 Summary.

What info do I need?

Transmitter number

Before you prepare T4 slips, enter your CRA transmitter number in your payroll settings.

Your transmitter number is a unique number provided to you by the CRA for electronic filing. It consists of MM followed by 6 digits. For example: MM555555

If you don't have a transmitter number yet, enter 555555. The CRA will send you a transmitter number to use for your next return.

Payroll account number

Have your CRA payroll account number handy. You will enter it on the CRA website.

Your CRA payroll account number is made up of:

• Your 9-digit business number
• A 2-letter account indicator (RP)
• A 4-digit account reference number

For example: 123456789 RP 0001

Web access code

To file online, you will need a web access code from the CRA.

Your web access code consists of 2 letters and 4 numbers, and is case-sensitive. For example: 51s2B7
